HANDS ON EQUATIONS REVIEW
Lesson Reminders *Lesson One Guess and Check * Lesson Two The student learns what X, the variable, means. Guess and Check still applies * Lesson #3 Legal Move- Take the same number of pawns from each side * Lesson #4 Legal Move- Subtract the same number cube value from each side
Lesson #5 Students use subtraction as part of the setup process. Lesson #6 Students learn that a 2 on the outside of the parenthesis means that what is on the inside is doubled. Lesson #7 Students transfer their hands-on learning with the game pieces to a pictorial notation using paper and pencil.
Level II • Lesson # 8 • Students solve equations involving the white pawn, called “star”, and written as “*”. They use the same legal move learned in Level 1. • Lesson # 9 • Students recognize the blue pawn and the white pawn as opposites of each other. Students will evaluate simple algebraic expressions. • Lesson # 10 • Students learn a new legal move in solving equations, since an X together with a * are worth zero.
Level II Continued • Lesson # 11 • In this lesson, the students learn that we may add a blue pawn to each side of a balanced system. • Lesson #12 • The students learn that a pair of opposite pawns, being worth zero, may be added to either side of a balanced setup. Another legal move • Lesson #13 • Problems are more easily solved if the problem is first reduced to one with number cubes on only one side of the setup, and the variables on the other.
Continued!!! • Lesson 14 • Add a convenient Zero to one side or the other when needed. Use your Legal Moves! Lesson 15 Students learn to recognize a written (-X) as a *, the white pawn. Lesson 16 All Hands On experiences may be transferred to a pictorial notation for solving linear equations using only paper and pencil.
