Chapter 1 – Chronology of Hajj Ibrahim (AS) Time Ismail (AS) – A gift from Allah (SWT) • First son of Ibrahim (AS) & Bibi Hajirah (RA) • Born in Palestine Migration to Makkah • Allah (SWT) commanded Ibrahim (AS) to take Bibi Hajirah and Ismail (AS) to the valley of Makkah; located in the desert of Arabia 7
Chapter 1 – Chronology of Hajj Ibrahim (AS) Time Thirst • There was no food and water in the valley; Ismail (AS) became very thirsty • Bibi Hajirah (RA) started searching for water by running back and forth 7 times between the hills of Safa & Marwah • Water started gushing out of the sand, which became known as Zam • People settled around the well of Zam and that is how the city of Makkah came to be 8
Chapter 1 – Chronology of Hajj Ibrahim (AS) Time The Dream • One day Ibrahim (AS) told Ismail (AS): “Oh my son, I have seen in a dream that I must give you in sacrifice. What is your thinking about this? ” (Al-Saffat, Ayah 102) • Upon hearing this, Ismail (AS) says: “Oh my father, do what Allah (SWT) has commanded you. I will be Insh. Allah patient and faithful. (Al-Saffat, Ayah 102) • So Ismail (AS) went to give the sacrifice, and just as Ibrahim (AS) raised the knife, Allah (SWT) called upon him and said: “Oh Ibrahim (AS), you have already done what was commanded in your dream” (Al-Saffat, Ayah 105) • Then a lamb appeared and was sacrificed instead 9
Chapter 1 – Chronology of Hajj Ibrahim (AS) Time Command for the Construction of the Kaabah • Allah (SWT) ordered to Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) that : • “…make my house pure for those who walk around it (tawaf); for those who come here for contemplation, for those who bow here for ruku, and for those who make sujood. ” (Al-Baqarah; Ayah 125) The Construction • Ismail (AS) got the stones to his father, who carefully placed each one to build the four walls of the Kaabah. 10

Chapter 1 – Chronology of Hajj Muhammad (PBUH) Time The Destruction • The Kaaba was destroyed by a flash flood • It was reconstructed by the Quraysh The Controversy • The tribes of Quraysh started fighting over who would put the Black Stone (Hajar ul Aswad) • The Prophet (PBUH) resolved this matter by asking each leader to hold the corner of the cloth upon which he placed the Black Stone • It is told that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "The stone and the station of Ibrahim (AS) are bequeathed from paradise, but Allah (SWT) obliterated their light, otherwise they would have lit between east and west". He also said, "When the black stone was lowered from paradise, it was whiter than milk, but the sins of humans made it black”. 13
Chapter 1 – Chronology of Hajj Muhammad (PBUH) Time The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah – Is the treaty that took place between the state of Medina and the Qurayshi tribe of Mecca in March 628 CE – Allowed the Muslims to perform Hajj over the next 10 years in peace for three days – No fighting for the next 10 years – The Treaty was breached by the Quraysh and the Treaty was dissolved – The Muslims made the first pilgrimage in 629 AD – This was the first and last Hajj of the Prophet (PBUH), where he gave his Last Sermon 14

Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach Umrah (Not necessary for Hajj-e-Ifrad) If Umrah Only: • Shave head • Remove Ihram • Ghusl (Bath/Shower) • Offer 2 Rakahths of Tahyatal-Wudu • Be in the state of Ihraam from Miqath and reach the Kaabah • Do Tawaf (7 rounds) • Pray 2 Rakaths in front of Maqam-e-Ibrahim • Hajj-e-Tamatu: Do Sa’ee between Safa and Marwah (Sa'ee Hajj-e-Qiran: Hajj-e-Ifrad*: consists • Shave headof 7 rounds) • Don’t shave head • Need not to • Remove Ihram • Continue to the steps of 8 th Dhul. Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach 8 th Dhul-Hajj (Mina) • Ghusl (Bath/Shower) • Offer 2 Rakahths of Tahyatal Wudu • Be in the state of Ihraam (For Hajj-e-Tamatu & Hajje-Qiran) from the point of Meqath • Make Intention for Hajj • Recite Talbiyah • Avoid forbidden acts of Ihram • Go to Mina and remain there through-out the day • Perform 5 prayers starting from the Dhuhr prayer and ending with the Fajr on the next day and then go to Arafat (Qasar Prayer will apply to all who do not reside in Makkah) 38

Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach 9 th Dhul-Hajj (Arafat) – [The core of the Hajj] • Go to Arafat and stay within the boundaries of Arafat [Very important or else Hajj will not count!] • Devote much of your time as possible to prayer within the boundaries of Arafat [Very important] • Perform Dhuhr and Asr combined during the time of Dhuhr prayer (Does not apply under the Hanafi Fiqh) • Do Duas before sunset [Very Important] • After sunset, and before performing Magrib prayer, go to Muzdalifah • In Muzdalifah, perform the Magrib and Isha prayer combined 41

Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach 10 th Dhul-Hajj (Muzdalifah & Mina) (Eid ul-Adha) • • Collect 7 pebbles or all the pebbles you need (about 49 or 70) Stay overnight at Muzdalifah and perform the Fajr prayer Shortly after the sunrise, return to Mina In Mina, do the following: • Stone the large Jamarat only • Slaughter the goat (offer Qurbani) • Shave/Trim your hair (The Ihram condition ends here) Go to the Haram and perform the Tawaf Al-Ifaadah (Tawaf-e -Zyarah) (This can be performed anytime from the 10 th through the 12 th of the month) After the Tawaf, perform the Sa'ee between Safa and Marwah (Sa'ee consists of 7 rounds) Go directly to Mina (It is important to stay in Mina until 12 th Dhul-Hajj) 45

Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach 11 th Dhul-Hajj (Mina) (Tashreeq Days Say the Takbirath) • Collect 21 pebbles • Stone the 3 Jamaraths (small, medium, large) (7 stones each) in order between Zawal (the starting time of Zuhur Prayer) and Guroob (right before Maghrib Prayer or Sunset) • Come back to the tent and stay in Mina to offer regular Prayers (Qasr Prayers) 47

Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach 12 th Dhul-Hajj (Mina) (Tashreeq Days - Say the Takbirath) • Collect 21 pebbles • Stone the 3 Jamaraths (small, medium, large) (7 stones each) in order between Zawal (the starting time of Zuhur Prayer) and Guroob (right before Magrib Prayer or Sunset) • Perform any Qasr Prayers before sunset • Leave Mina before sunset to go to the Haram • Your Hajj has been completed!!! • If you are a non-Makkan resident, then perform the Tawaf-e. Wida (The Sa'ee is not required). If you are going to stay in Makkah for more days, then perform the Tawaf-e-Wida near your departure from Makkah. If you have performed the Tawaf already and then if you stay longer, then re-perform the Tawaf-e -Wida • Note: If you cannot leave Mina before sunset to go to the Haram on the 12 th, then stay overnight in Mina, and then on the 13 th go to the Haram at anytime after stoning the 3 Jamaraths again on the 13 th 50

Chapter 3 – Actual Hajj A Step by Step Approach 13 th Dhul-Hajj (Outside of Mina) (Tashreeq Days Say the Takbirath) Note: This day only exists if you did not leave Mina before sunset on the 12 th • • Collect 21 pebbles if you are staying at Mina If staying, then stone the 3 Jamaraths (small, medium, large) in order anytime and you can now go to the Haram to perform Zuhur and other prayers Your Hajj has now been completed, if you continued to the 13 th of Dhul-Hajj If you are a non-Makkan resident, then perform the Tawaf-e. Wida (The Sa'ee is not required). If you are going to stay in Makkah for more days, then perform the Tawaf-e-Wida near your departure from Makkah. If you have performed the Tawaf already and then if you stay longer, then re-perform the Tawaf-e -Wida 52
