Anagen • Anagen is the active growing stage. • Hair germ cells reproduce at the matrix to form the hair bulb. • This is called mitosis. • Hair cells continue rising up the follicle and as they pass through the bulb they separate to form different layers of the hair.

Catagen • Follows anagen when the hair separates from the papilla. • It is a transitional stage from active to resting. • The hair stops growing and the follicle begins to shrink. • The separated hair is carried to the base of the sebaceous gland.

Catagen • It stays here until it falls out or until a new hair pushes it out. • A catagen hair will have no bulb visible when it is removed and will appear shorter and dehydrated.
