2 3 DEGREE STRUCTURE An undergraduate degree is typically 3 years in New Zealand. The exceptions are law, medicine and engineering which are 4 -6 years. Other professional qualifications require graduate (what we call postgraduate) study. 2 5 ACADEMIC RIGOR New Zealand university classes are not easy, especially § Psychology § Finance and Economics Classes designed for international students tend to be lower pressure, but you still need to do the work There are usually hurdle requirements § You must attempt all assessment tasks to pass

2 6 INDEPENDENT LEARNING Compared to the US, New Zealand unis § Have few contact hours; 2 -5 hours per week, per subject § Academics won't chase you up if you miss classes or assignments. Almost all lectures are recorded and available online § But don’t leave it to the last minute to watch them! The main forms of teaching are § lectures (50 -500+ students), § tutorials (10 -25 students), § and labs/practicals. Each tutor or lecturer has 1 hour of office hours per week, per subject. § Not very popular

2 7 SEMESTER PACE The pace of the Kiwi semester is slow compared to UC 12 weeks of classes With 1 -2 week mid-semester break Followed by 3 -4 week exam period Most assessment in second half of semester Exams often worth 50% or more It may look like your Kiwi classmates are slacking off, but they’re not. Travel early in the semester!

CRITERION-REFERENCED GRADES New Zealand grades are criterion-referenced rather than normreferenced (i. e. , curved). Criterion-referenced grading reflects how well you performed compared to a pre-determined, objective standard. Norm-referenced grading reflects how well you performed compared to everyone else in your class. In theory, everyone can get an A+ in New Zealand (but they don’t)

Just because a class has been approved by your campus, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to take it.

STUDENT LIFE Most students commute to uni § They tend to live with their families or in rented accommodation. § They go home straight after classes. This can make it difficult to form friendship with locals. Kiwi students may have already formed their friendship groups § Join clubs to get to know local students. § Be prepared to travel away from campus to socialise

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE Check out the i. Site in each town whenever you travel to a new place. All NZ universities have various Facebook groups & pages. Please join them to get current student perspectives on the campus, courses and things to do. Some campuses also have an unofficial handbook (catalog) prepared by the student association. MULTICULTURALISM The New Zealand population is very small § 4. 7 million in NZ v. 39 million in CA Around 15% of the NZ population identifies as Maori (tangata whenua – indigenous) § Maori migrated to New Zealand from islands in the Pacific Ocean around 1250 AD. Over 25% of New Zealanders were born overseas § UK, Pacific Islands, China, India, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand. . . § Hence, our amazingly multicultural cuisine!

WEATHER & WATER While NZ has no critters that can harm you, you need to be careful of the impact of the extreme & changeable weather. If you are tramping, please check weather advisories to make sure it is safe where you plan to tramp. Carry wet weather gear & pack extra food supplies in case you become trapped by the weather. Carry an emergency locator beacon with you. Never cross a flooded river!

DRIVING Don’t drive! But, if you do. . . § You can use your CA License § You can’t turn left on a red light § Stick to the speed limit! Do NOT go 5 -10 over the limit § There are lots of red light/speed cameras in New Zealand § Roads are narrow, windy and often don’t have a hard shoulder § Crowded cars are dangerous § If pulled over by police, stay in your car

ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS The legal drinking age is 18 years Cannabis, MDMA, methamphetamine and cocaine are illegal Please don’t drink (or use other drugs) and drive! § Blood Alcohol Limit is. 05 (not. 08) § “Booze Buses” randomly check whether drivers are affected by alcohol or other drugs Use alcohol and other drugs responsibly Keep an eye on your drinks Don’t take something if you don’t know what it is Most of all, take care of your friends If problems arise, let us know.
