Habituation a psychological process where we learn fromappreciate
Habituation: a psychological process where we learn from/appreciate less and less what we are repeatedly exposed to
[1] [Jesus declared] I came to the world to not fit in the world.
[2] [Jesus declared] To fit in a broken world is to live a broken life
[3] [Jesus declared] Come and learn from me and I’ll give you a new way to live
THIS NEW WAY OF LIFE “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; ” (John 10: 28) “whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. ” (John 4: 14)
“Eternal Life” We think an unending life we live one day in heaven
“Eternal Life” We think: an unending life we live one day in heaven Jesus means: an unstoppable life we live here on earth
Mk 5 / Eternal Life Meets A Broken World “Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live. ” (v 22 -23)
Mk 5 / Eternal Life Meets A Broken World “When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed. ” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering” (v 27 -29)
“No one is a face in the crowd to Jesus. No one is an anonymous beneficiary. No one is an inconvenience or a burden to Jesus. This all the more remarkable when you understand this story. Jesus is on His way to save a life when this woman grabs a hold of him and Jesus doesn’t seem to mind. ” (p 25)
Mk 5 / Eternal Life Meets A Broken World “While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead, ” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more? ” Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe. ” (v 3536)
This is Jesus Even the way He loves & saves us never completely fits our expectations. “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” (v 41)
Nothing hurries Jesus! Nothing worries him.
Nothing hurries Jesus. Nothing worries him. Nothing stops him!
“We race against the clock. Bound by time and the ultimate limit on our lives: death. The cold hard reality that we only have so much time. Jesus seems oblivious to any such limit. He simply moves from need to need at his own pace, with his own priorities – priorities that are infuriatingly different to ours. He is baffling, exasperating, unmanageable, but unwaveringly good. ” (“ 321 The Story Of God, The World & You”, p 25)
“Jesus urges us to join him in ignoring the constraints that frame our vision of life. He wants us to give as though unconfined by wealth, health, danger or death. To live without the slavery to worry, greed, lust or pride. The way of Jesus means not holding back, not shutting down, not clinging on. He exhorts us to be the person with nothing to lose, nothing to prove, nothing to hide, nothing to fear. ” (p 31)
We tell him, “Jesus! Life doesn’t work that way!” He replies, “No, your life doesn’t work that way”
We tell him, “Jesus! Life doesn’t work that way!” He replies, “No, your life doesn’t work that way” It’s not just the world that is broken - it’s the very nature inside of you.
(Mt 7) Jesus says we have a problem Bad trees who can’t produce good fruit (v 17)
(Mt 7) Jesus says we have a problem Bad trees who can’t produce good fruit (v 17) Dirty fountains that spew selfishness & lies (v 20)
(Mt 7) Jesus says we have a problem Bad trees who can’t produce good fruit (v 17) Dirty fountains that spew selfishness & lies (v 20) Evil who think we know what good is (v 11)
(Mt 7) Jesus says we have a problem Bad trees who can’t produce good fruit (v 17) Dirty fountains that spew selfishness & lies (v 20) Evil who think we know what good is (v 11) Blind & we think we know God but don’t (v 21)
This is Jesus HE SAYS WE’VE GOT A DEEPER PROBLEM Our broken life is totally opposed to His eternal life.
AND HERE IS WHY JESUS CALL US “LOST” We shouldn’t fit in this broken world But we also don’t fit in His world (life) “For the Son of Man came to seek and save that which was lost. ” Luke 19: 10
We want to fix the world Jesus wants us to forgive the world
We want to work harder Jesus wants us to rest deeper
We think we can love the world Jesus wants us to love our enemy
We live to gather security & control Jesus wants us to give security & control away
We think we have to get ahead and rule Jesus wants us to get behind others and serve
This is Jesus HE ISN’T LIKE ANY OTHER RELIGION Religion: work harder to earn good life
This is Jesus HE ISN’T LIKE ANY OTHER RELIGION Religion: work harder to earn good life Humanism: discover the good life in you
This is Jesus HE ISN’T LIKE ANY OTHER RELIGION Religion: work harder to earn good life Humanism: discover the good life in you Jesus: you can’t earn it or find it because you’re actually opposed to it
JESUS OFFERS A RADICAL SOLUTION “The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. ” (John 12: 25 -26)
JESUS OFFERS A RADICAL SOLUTION Follow me to the only meeting place where I can give you my life, and there, I’ll take yours.
COMMUNION / Matthew 26: 26 -29 Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body. ” 27 Then Jesus took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many [like you] for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom. ”
