A HABITAT is the place that an animal or plant relies upon for the food, water, shelter that it need to survive. The size of a habitat varies enormously. The common carpenter ant needs only a few square inches for an entire colony. In contrast, a cougar can need 175 square miles of land to hunt and find a mate. A habitat can be considered to be the local environment of a specific species. There are many habitats within a biome.
