Mission Statement "Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope"
How It Works Homes are built using volunteer labor. Homes are sold at no profit. In some locations outside of the United States, Habitat for Humanity charges interest to protect against inflation. Habitat has help more than 4 million people construct, rehabilitate, or preserve more than 800, 000 since 1976. This makes it the largest not-for-profit builder in the world.
Green Building Habitat for Humanity builds simple houses with appropriate materials. National offices are exploring “green building”, which includes energy efficiency and sustainability. In the U. S. , many affiliates are building homes that are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Charging Interest Habitat homeowners in the U. S. and Canada pay no interest on their non-profit mortgages. Some affiliates outside of the U. S. adjust the interest rate so the homeowners can avoid inflation. They keep this in mind with their goal that says: “the repayments from one house should ideally build another house of the same design”
Habitat Re. Stores are retail outlets that sell new and used building and household materials donated by small businesses, large companies, job sites, and individuals. Some Habitat Re. Stores have raised enough funds to build an additional 10 or more houses per year.
A Brush With Kindness is a locally operated program helping low-income homeowners who struggle to keep up the exterior of their homes. Groups of volunteers help homeowners with exterior maintenance. This includes painting, minor exterior repairs, landscaping, and clean-up.
Global Village Trips Habitat for Humanity International places a strong emphasis on building homes around the world. Volunteers can help with global villages trips. Habitat for Humanity takes volunteers to different parts of the world to help build houses. Teams generally number from 8 to 15, and last between 9 and 14 days.
Message to Volunteers “to experience another culture while making a difference in the lives of others. . . work alongside members of the host community in building decent, affordable housing. . . help raise awareness of the burden of poverty housing and create a true global village of love, community, homes and hope. ”
