Why Sharpen the Saw? • Taking time to sharpen the saw makes the job of cutting down a tree much easier.

Examples of Sharpening the Saw from History • From the Bible: God creating the heavens and Earth in 6 days and resting on the 7 th day. • Labor laws mandating that employers give employees scheduled breaks • Siestas (napping at noon) in Spain • Recess for elementary school children • Labor laws preventing work on Sundays
Examples of “Sharpening the Saw” at Google • Free gourmet breakfast, lunch, and dinner. • Free health and dental • Free haircuts • Free dry cleaning • Discounted massages • Gyms and swimming pools • Video games, foosball, pool, etc. • On-site doctor • Nap Pods • 20% of their time is spent pursuing innovative ideas that they are passionate about
Example of “Sharpening the Saw” at Chick-fil-A • According to Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, the store is closed on Sunday to give employees a day for “family, worship, fellowship or rest. ” • Interestingly, the closure on Sundays does not appear to affect the company’s profitability. Customers simply eat at Chick-fil-A on the days they are open! • In 2015 Chick-Fil-A did $5. 8 billion in revenue, with each restaurant selling around $3. 1 million. That’s more than Mc. Donald’s averages at any of their stores. • The average employee turnover rate is 107% per year at most fast -food restaurants, but only 60% at Chick-fil-A! Guaranteed time off (Sundays) seems to help keep employees.
