Habit #4 Think Win-Win “Pursue Victory with Honor”

Ice-Breaker Stand next to a partner. p One of you needs to make a fist; as tight a fist as you possibly can. p On the count of three I want the other partner to try and open the other person’s hand. p

Follow-Up Did any of you simply ask the other person to open their fist? p “When the environment feels competitive we automatically play with a Win-Lose mindset. ” What does this mean? p

Habit #4 - Think Win-Win 1. 2. 3. 4. In a Win-Win relationship, both people are happy and feel equal. Each person needs to develop a healthy definition of the word COMPETITION; develop a balance between wanting to win and doing it in a healthy, positive way. Realize that COMPARISONS to other people are not healthy and a waste of your time. To have a winning relationship with someone, friendly competition can stay but comparisons must go.

Group Activity Get with your assigned group of four p This is the BEST activity for demonstrating the importance of working with others for a common “win. ” p You need others in your group to succeed in order to succeed yourself. p The only way that your team can be successful is if you all participate. p

Directions Each group has: - 1 pencil, 4 pieces of string, a penny and a “course. ” -The goal is for your group is use the resources given to guide the penny through the course (start to finish) without touching the sides of the course. -This is NOT a competition with any other group in the room

Rules p p p The penny must stay within the lines of the course at all times. The penny can only be touched by the pencil’s eraser. Each person can only touch one of the strings No one can EVER touch the pencil while the penny is en route The paper may not be moved or tilted at any point while the penny is en route.

“Win – Lose” – The Totem Pole People with this attitude usually: p Use other people, emotionally or physically, for their own selfish purposes p Try to get ahead at the expense of others p Spread rumors about others p Concentrate on getting their own way without thinking about others’ feelings p Become jealous and envious when something good happens to someone else

“Lose – Win” – The Doormat People with this attitude usually: p Set low expectations for themselves p Have low self-esteem and never consider themselves worthy or good enough p Compromise their standards over and over again p Give in to peer pressure p Allow themselves to be walked on with the excuse of being the “peacemaker” p Is there a time when a Lose-Win attitude is fine?

“Lose – Lose” – The Downward Spiral People with this attitude usually: p Seek revenge p Desire to win at all costs p Are obsessed with others in a negative manner p Have codependent and emotionally damaging relationships

“Win – Win” – The All You Can Eat Buffet People with this attitude usually: p p p Are happy when others succeed Help others succeed Are willing to share recognition with others See life as an All-you-can-eat buffet for everybody Watch the video to see an example of Win-Win in action: Sportsmanship

Scenarios: Choose one • Example Situation: The Smith family wants to have their evening meal at 6 p. m. This happens to be the time when the kid’s favorite TV show is on. • Situation 1: Brad and a bunch of friends are at Mc. Donald’s. He spills his orange pop and it splashes on Amber at the next table. Amber’s friend Mike, who doesn’t like Brad, sees this from across the restaurant. Mike goes over to the table and gets in Brad’s face. • Situation 2: You and your boyfriend/girlfriend cannot agree on what to do tonight. You want to go to the movies and he/she wants to go out to dinner with some friends. You really want to spend some time alone with him/her but he/she thinks this is “boring. ” • Situation 3: Twins, Trevor and Tom, got to borrow their grandmother’s car for a week while she was in Florida. The twins parents told them that if there was any fighting, they would park the car until Granny got back. On Wednesday, they both had a practice at 5: 00, and 7: 30 pm. Trevor had to meet with two different bands and Tom had basketball and hockey practice.
