Gyula Tornai foi um pintor orientalista que nasceu em Görgö, Hungria, em 1861. Recebeu sua formação artística em Viena, Munique e na “Benczúr’s Master School”, em Budapeste. Inicialmente, fez pinturas de gêneros e, mais tarde, como resultado de suas longas viagens, seu foco passou a ser em temas exóticos. Odaliscas, eunucos, sarracenos são retratados em detalhes meticulosamente representados. Tornai passou dez anos em Marrocos e morou em Tânger por um ano entre 1890 e 1891. Em 1900, participou da “Exposition Universelle” em Paris, ganhando a medalha de bronze. No verão de 1905, ele viajou para o Extremo Oriente, onde aprimorou seu interesse em temas orientais. Durante este período, ele percorreu a Índia e o Japão, tendo acesso a muitas facetas da vida e dos costumes japoneses, o que permitiu que ele explorasse o budismo e o xintoísmo em profundidade.

Harem Holgyek Várias de suas obras estão exibidas na “Hungarian National Gallery”. Tornai participou de exposições em Paris e Londres em 1907, na “Budapest Art Gallery” em 1909 e no “National Salon” em 1917. Em Londres, Berlim e nos centros de Arte da época, o pintor itinerante húngaro era muito conhecido. Revistas famosas relataram suas imagens especiais, decorativas e inspiradas em épocas. O artista morreu em 1928.
