Gummy Bear Lab An Introduction to the Scientific
Gummy Bear Lab An Introduction to the Scientific Method and Experiments!
Lab Rules • First, let’s review our lab rules and safety! • It’s important to follow directions exactly as they are given. • Stay on task and work cooperatively with your partners.

Question What do we want to know by doing this investigation? What solution will make the gummy bear increase in mass and length the most?
Hypothesis I think _________will increase in mass and length the most because__________. *Remember to state “why” you think so Guiding Questions to ask yourself: Which one will have the most mass and why? Least? Which one will have the longest length? Why?
Materials Gummy Bears Water Salt Beaker Soda Vinegar Cups Yeast Pan balance Ruler Bowl Spoon
Procedure 1. Make an observation of the gummy bears and record your findings. 2. Ask a question about what you want to learn. 3. Form a hypothesis about what would happen to the gummy bear’s length and mass. 4. Gather materials for your lab. 5. Measure the length of the gummy bear in cm with a ruler. Record your data. 6. Measure the mass of the gummy bear in grams with a pan balance. Record your data. 7. Measure 50 m. L of water in a beaker for each of the cups. Label each cup and pour it into each cup. 8. Measure 50 m. L of each solution (vinegar, soda, salt water, yeast) and add it to each of those cups.
Procedure 9. Drop one gummy bear into each solution. 10. Let the cups sit overnight for exactly the same amount of time. 11. The next day, observe the changes in length and mass of each bear. Measure with a ruler and weigh their mass on a pan balance. 12. Record the data on your sheet and make comparisons to analyze the data. 13. Draw conclusions about which gummy bear increased in size the most. Make sure to compare your results to your hypothesis. 14. Share results with your classmates. 15. Encourage others to repeat the experiment.
