Vision �To make GTU a hub of research, technology and entrepreneurship. �To develop new innovative and revolutionary ways to emulate a similar success in education, in order to make GTU a world class university. �To change the educational system in such a way that it serves the needs of the people of Gujarat. Objectives of GTU � GTU was founded in the year 2007 by an Act of Gujarat State with the following main objective: � To development the knowledge of science, engineering, technology, management and environment for the advancement of quality of life of the mankind in general, and in relation to the domain of engineering and technological development and applications. � The prime object of GTU shall be to create Centres and Institutions of Excellence in basic and applied science, engineering and technology in particular. � There are 9 (nine) other Objects under the Main Object. Delhi Technology University (DTU) � Courses offered at DTU are Bachelor of Engineering (B. E. ), Bachelor of Technology (Part -time), Master of Engineering (M. E. ), Master of Science (M. Sc. ), and Master of Business Administration (M. B. A), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D. ) � The Founder Vice-Chancellor heads the GTU. � The Registrar reports the V. C. ◦ The Sr. Asst. Registrar (Finance & A/C), the Jt. Registrar (Admin) and Security Officer assist the Registrar. ◦ Further, there are 5 Asst. IIT Kharagpur � IIT Kharagpur shares a common Visitor (a position held by the President of India and the IIT Council with other IITs. The rest of IIT Kharagpur's organisational structure is distinct from that of the other IITs. � The Board of Governors of IIT Kharagpur is under the IIT Council, and has 13 members that include representatives of the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand Orissa, in addition to other members appointed by the IIT Council and the institute's senate. � Under the Board of Governors is the institute's director, who serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the IIT. Technology University of the Philippines (TUP) � The President of the University exercises the overall leadership in ensuring that the University's efforts are directed towards the attainment of the institutional vision, mission, goals and objectives of TUP. � The President works in partnership with the four Sectoral Vice Presidents, namely: ◦ ◦ VP - Academic Affairs VP - Administration and Finance VP - Research and Extension, and VP - Planning, Development and Information Systems. � Each of the vice presidents is assisted by Directors and other officials for the effective implementation of their functions. Organizational Challenges faced by GTU Part VI
GTU is the Largest University in Gujarat � For the smooth functioning of a vast University like GTU, which caters to the entire field of Engineering, Pharmacy, MBA Programs and Computer Applications (MCA), a well-designed organizational structure is not only essential, but absolutely imperative. � GTU has about 4, 000 students, a large number of Bachelors and Master’s programs, and robust doctoral programs. It has about 500 colleges affiliated from all nooks and corners of Gujarat. � Hence, for such a large University it is quite essential that the (proposed) organizational structure is developed considering successful functioning of India’s, Asia’s and World’s some of the best Universities and educational institutions mentioned in the review. Padmabhusan Dr. P. V. Indiresan, former Director –IIT Madras � Dr. P. V. Indiresan drew parallel from Vedas through various Slokas which signified the importance of knowledge, skills and human development for the benefit of society at large. � He appreciated GTU for taking leadership for conducting Research Project of DSTU for the first time in the country. � He advised to develop GTU with a vision for 50 – 100 years. He said that GTU should aim at becoming a world class University like Georgia Tech, USA surpassing even the best institutions of the country like IITs (and other universities), where he taught for 40 years. Dr. A. K. Malik, Registrar, South Asia University, New Delhi � Dr. A. K. Malik talked about his experiences in developing the structure of South Asia University (SAU) as a founder Registrar. � The South Asia University is developed and funded by SAARC Countries. Therefore, the admissions are at Asia level, based on the quota reserved for each country. � Currently, the SAU offers 6 - 7 PG Programs in Humanities. It plans to offer undergraduate programs in near future. � He emphasized the need for developing an excellent library with online and print media books and journals from whole the world. 29 th Sept, 2013 (contd. ) �GTU should introduce compulsory subjects of communication skill, Personality Development and Human Values in each stream �It is possible to explore possibility of commencing Distance Education Mode of academic programmes �GTU may think offering Multi-entry –Multi exit facilities wherein the students undergo 2 semesters of a graduate programme and quit with a diploma and again after a brief industry exposure rejoin for remaining graduation period. In a Nutshell… � GTU’s proposed Organization Structure may be Matrixbased, a mix of hierarchy at Head Quarter, with Decentralization at Regional Level with sufficient Autonomy to each Head of the Function / Department / Wing / Section – � to take decisions and be responsible for its own decisions, � Within the framework of authority and responsibility, accountability, chain of command, inter-personal relationship and team-based approach ◦ (like today’s public sector Banks that have become more efficient, wide-spread, customer-centric and profitable than many private sector Banks).
