Guidelines for Observation Classroom Management Observation
What is Observation? • Action or process of observing something or someone in order to gain information • Carefully with all senses; describe and record
Why is Observation Valuable? • It leads to learning and action • Information can be a foundation for academic discussion • Data is used to develop theory • Data might prove or disprove a theory • One aspect of evaluating performance
Observer Etiquette Stay seated with a good view of the room Become invisible so teachers and children can forget you are there Look down and look occupied when children are near; avoid interaction
Subjective vs. Objective • Subjective notes interpret events through the lens of your experiences and biases.
Objective vs. Subjective • Objective notes describe or record what is done or said without interpretation. • Objective notes are more usable for later interpretation. • One observation may not provide enough information for a fair interpretation.
