You can mark these straight afterwards.
1) Look at the front cover: make a prediction about the story by using the title and the images on the front of the book. Example: The story is about a girl who is expected to be perfect in a place called perfect, but she is struggling, or unable to be perfect like everything else there. Additionally, somebody is watching her and everyone else to make sure everything is perfect. (2 marks) 1) Read the blurb. Why do you think everyone goes blind in Perfect? Many possible answers e. g. The secret that is being kept by the mysterious watchers could be kissing people to go blind. The place is making people blind so that they cannot see the truth of what Perfect is like. Etc. (1 mark) 1) Do you think that the place called Perfect is perfect? Explain your answer. I think that the place called perfect is not perfect – the rules are too strict e. g. being neat and tidy and perfectly behaved all the time. Additionally, her dad disappearing and her mum behaving differently shows that there is something wrong in Perfect, so everything cannot be perfect. (3 marks)

Answers Vocabulary 1)Use a dictionary to find the meaning of: a) urge – a strong desire or impulse, almost without control e. g. the child felt the urge to laugh. b) Poised – being composed, in full control of what you are doing. 2) ‘ “Oh” Scrope drawled…’ What does the word drawled mean? What tone of voice does this suggest Uncle Scrope was using? Speaking in a slow, lazy way, which suggests Uncle Scrope is not surprised to see Hanny. Retrieval 3) What is Mouse having for supper? Mouse was eating Buttery bread for dinner. 4) What time of day are the events in the text happening? In the evening, as mouse is being put to bed. 5) What floor was Mouse on? Mouse was on the 4 th floor. Making Inferences 6) Do you think this text is set in the past or nowadays? Why? In the past, as phrases like ‘supper tray’ are not used in modern times. Also, having nursery maids is not as common now, whereas in the past it was more common. 7) Why do you think Hanny says nothing about what she saw to Uncle Scrope? Uncle Scrope was telling Hanny what to do, which might mean that he is in charge, so there is nobody she can tell. She might also be scared, as she already saw that he was about to kill his own nephew. 8) Why might Uncle Scrope want Mouse to have an ‘accident’? Mouse’s family has a house maid which means that they are wealthy. He may want Mouse to get hurt so that he can take all of their money and their house. Writer’s choices 9) Why do you think the writer opens the text with a description of the birds and the trees and clouds? Either to show that it is a nice day, and also to show why Mouse is trying to get out of the window. 10) Why do you think the author has chosen to give Uncle Scrope “pale eyes” and Mouse “bright brown eyes”? He has chosen these descriptions to show that Mouse is a good character, and to show that Uncle Scrope is a more evil character. Challenge question (extended answer) 11) Do you think Mouse comes from a rich or a poor family? Explain why, using evidence from the text. Rich family, as he has a maid to look after him, as well as having a house that is four stories high. Additionally, things such as a marble stair case indicicate that he is from a rich family. Prediction 12) How do you think this story might end? Why do you think this might be the ending? Multiple answers – focus on reasons why based on text, e. g. Uncle Scrope gets kicked out and Mouse lives happily after.
