Guide to the i. GCSE Reading Paper (Extended) This is a 2 hour paper with 3 questions. That are 50 marks available and it is based on two passages. Passage A - ü ü ü Question 1 20 marks (15 for reading and 5 for writing) Likely tasks: letter, newspaper article, interview, conversation… Top Tips Read through the passage first. Highlight each bullet point in the question a different colour. Highlight information that applies to each bullet point in your assigned colour. Use your highlights to answer the question. Pay attention to the form you need to write in. Address all 3 bullet points equally. - ü ü Passage B Question 2 10 marks Always subdivided into section a and b. Always about how writer achieves effects Top Tips Do this question last. Re-read your assigned paragraphs and decide what the general tone or effect is for each one. Highlight 4 effective words/phrases that create that tone Write 4 PDE (point/define/effect) paragraphs for EACH question and finish EACH with a sentence summing up the effect. - ü ü ü Question 3 20 marks (15 for reading and 5 for writing) You will have to make a bullet point list and then turn those into a summary. Top Tips Do this question first. Read the passage before you read the question. Highlight information in the text that answers the question. That are 50 marks available and you will have one passage. • • • Question 1 Text transformation 1 hour 25 marks: 10 Reading & 15 Writing Given a form: letter, blog post, article, etc. Have to include information from the passage/s but also your own opinions! Should be writing to argue/persuade. Top Tips Read the passages first. Highlight each bullet point in the question a different colour and search for information that applies to each in the passage. Address all three bullet points equally in your answer. Pay attention to the form and audience. Use AFOREST! You get the most marks for your writing, so be engaging and ensure your arguments are well developed, with reference to counter arguments. • • • Question 2 Have to answer 1 question from a choice of 4 Choose from a narrative or a descriptive task 1 hour 25 marks: 13 marks for content and structure. 12 marks for style and accuracy Top Tips Spend no more than 5 minutes planning. You don’t have much time! Unless you are ultra confident with narrative, do the descriptive task. Use the senses, imagery, metaphor, simile, etc! Use paragraphs. Check your technical accuracy. Proof-read! Describe in detail. Focus on the little things. Be imaginative and original. Show, don't tell.
