Types of Guidance • Indirect Guidance: guide through the environment • Example: • Placing toys on a high shelf if they are not to be played with today • Low hooks for coats and backpacks • Storage shelves labeled with toy pictures • Direct Guidance: guide through touch or words • Example: • • Use walking feet in the hall Holding a child’s hand while walking out to a car Touching a child to get his attention Guiding the hand while using a crayon
Use of Rules… • Rules will no t be the same in any two facilities. • Each care facility has it’s own tempo, policy, and style • It is the teacher’s responsibility establish and maintain rules WHY? 1. According to the law, children’s health and safety must be protected 2. Children need a consistent environment to form trust 3. Rule provide an opportunity for self-control and decision making

Teacher’s Role… CONSIDER REASONS ILL, TIERD, NORMAL FOR AGE, CURIOUS, OVERSTIMULATED BE POSITIVE Praise Behaviors Be controlled Use a calm voice Model appropriate behavior Eliminate negative words GIVE CHOICES Children like to chose…they feel some control Limit choices Help child see they do have a choice
BE FIRM Express concern with care Be decisive and definite: as a matter of fact Unnecessary: mean, mad, harsh, loud, angry COMMUNICATE Physically go to the child’s level Use simple language Label feelings for child Show positive body language Use positive comments

3 Step Action Plan • STOP!!!!! For what reason is this child behaving this way? • THINK!!!!! Is there a way for this child to solve the problem him/herself? • CHOOSE!!!!! The best technique for the situation
