GSACEP Who we are • Federal Emergency Medicine Physicians – Active Duty Military, Reserve, Guard and Retired – Veteran’s Affairs, CDC, and other federal agencies • 9 th largest Chapter in ACEP – 1100 members across the globe • Purpose: Promote quality emergency care and advance the specialty of emergency medicine within the military and federal healthcare systems GSACEP 3

Road blocks? • Getting involved requires travel • I have to burn leave to go to meetings – Permissive TDY • There is no funding • There is too much red tape to get approval • Membership is too expensive GSACEP 5
Costs / Benefits • Residents/ students are free (no chapter dues) • Physicians in the uniformed services, while serving as GMOs eligible for candidate membership • Deployed members can be inactive • New Active members in military service receive a 50% reduction in dues their first year and a 33% reduction their second year GSACEP 6

Fellowship in Leadership and Advocacy • Designed to develop and groom future military and federal emergency medicine leaders. • Combines elements of mentoring, with skills in organization, education, advocacy, and involvement. • Nominees must meet the following criteria: – Active Resident in an accredited Emergency Medicine residency program or young faculty <5 years out of training. – Two years obligated service remaining in military or VA service. – Active member of GSACEP – Possess a track record of outstanding work and participation in professional activities. – Commit to all elements of the GSACEP fellow expectations. Fellowship in Leadership and Advocacy • Over the course of their one year fellowship, GSACEP Fellows will participate/contribute in the following ways: – Volunteer as a member of one ACEP committee of your choice. – Volunteer as a member of one GSACEP committee of your choice. – Participate in GSACEP Board of Directors conference calls and attend BOD meetings at conferences outlined below. – Write one article for the GSACEP Newsletter, "The EPIC". – Act as Alternate GSACEP Councillor for the annual ACEP Council Meeting. (October timeframe) • GSACEP provides airfare, 3 nights hotel, and per-diem. – Represent GSACEP at the ACEP annual Scientific Assembly. (October timeframe) • GSACEP provides 2 nights hotel, and per-diem. – Attend GSACEP annual Government Services Symposium. (Mar/Apr timeframe) • GSACEP provides airfare, waives tuition, provides 4 nights hotel, and per-diem. – Attend annual ACEP Leadership and Advocacy Conference. C. • Meeting objectives – Acquire information critical to serving as a leader at the state or national level. – Identify your role in advancing key issues facing emergency medicine. – Meet with members of Congress and other key policy makers. – Understand the elements of conducting successful meetings, projects, and chapter operations. – Gain skills in media relations, making presentations, and networking for influence. – Hold one-on-one discussions with ACEP leaders and staff. – Reenergize your enthusiasm and commitment.
