Lesson Objective: To explore the concept of growth mindset.
To what extent do you agree with each statement? Give each statement a rating from 1 to 10 and note this down. AGREE 10 People can improve at anything if they work hard enough at it. GROWTH MINDSET What is mindset? A set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determines a person’s behavior and attitude. Neuroscientists discovered that the brain is flexible and as a result came up with the idea of ‘growth mindset’ and ‘fixed mindset. ’
Based on the picture, can you think of any ideas about what a growth mindset and fixed mindset might involve?

FIXED VS GROWTH MINDSET Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset Believe qualities like intelligence and ability are stable and cannot change over time. Believe qualities like intelligence and ability are not fixed and can grow over time in the right conditions.
GROWTH MINDSET • The good news is…. We can change our brain! • The growth mindset is based on the belief that people can change their intelligence or ability through hard work, practice and effort. • Students with a growth mindset: • Ask more questions. • Seek out challenges that allow them to learn something new. • Spend more time on difficult schoolwork. • Try new strategies. • Seek help from other students or teachers. • See mistakes as ways to learn and grow so they aren’t afraid of
HOW CAN WE CHANGE OUR THINKING? Look at the fixed mindset statements below and think about how you could change them to fit with a growth mindset. Fixed mindset I’m no good at this. I’m already awesome at this. I give up. This is too hard. I can’t make this any better. I just can’t do Maths. I made a mistake so I’m useless. She’s so clever, I’ll never be that clever. • People who are successful often seem to have it all, but what you see is just the tip of the iceberg! • Most successful people go through lots of struggles and challenges and have to show years of hard work and resilience to get where they are. • They will all have had disappointments and failures, but they used a growth mindset to learn from their mistakes and not give up. • Failure is part of success! It shows you what doesn’t work and what to do next. • Watch the video to see some famous examples of people who failed before they succeeded.
HOW CAN I CHANGE MY MINDSET? 1. 2. Be honest with yourself - are you REALLY giving your best effort? 3. Realise hard work is key- Putting a lot of work and effort into learning is key! Seek out challenges, don’t avoid something because it looks hard! 4. Use feedback- Take on board any feedback that you are given and use it to help you improve. 5. Ask questions- Don’t be afraid to ask for help or feedback if you are Learn from your mistakes- Don’t give up, even if something doesn’t work first time! Think about what hasn’t worked and how you could improve it.
YOUR TASK- YOUR OWN SUCCESS STORY Think of a time when you were successful at something and describe how you got there. Use the sentence starters to help you if you need them or think of your own.
