James Chapter One Summary 1. Normal trials of life don’t crush genuine faith – instead, they produce endurance (1: 1 -12) 2. We overcome temptations by relying on God and His word (1: 1318). 3. Genuineness will have us submitting to God’s word (law) without hypocrisy – humbly and completely (1: 19 -27). 8/17/16 --- Fink A Study of James - Obedience - The Road to Freedom--- James 1: 19 -27 2

Obedience – The Road to Freedom! ““ 19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness (humility, NASV) the implanted (engrafted, KJV) word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1: 19 -27). 8/17/16 --- Fink A Study of James - Obedience - The Road to Freedom--- James 1: 19 -27 3

Obedience sets us free 1. By being implanted (engrafted) – 1: 21 2. By being a mirror for our soul – 1: 23 3. By giving us law (rules) that grant freedom to the willful submitter – 1: 25. 4. By having receptive hearts softened by being quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger – 1: 19 -20. 5. By avoiding wickedness – 1: 21 • Negatively we must remove hindering sins • Positively we must welcome the Word into our hearts and be productive (result driven). 8/17/16 --- Fink A Study of James - Obedience - The Road to Freedom--- James 1: 19 -27 4

About the “Perfect law of liberty” (Ja. 1: 25) • “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jer. 31: 31 -33) 8/17/16 --- Fink A Study of James - Obedience - The Road to Freedom--- James 1: 19 -27 5
