Fragments Sentence Fragment is a part of a sentence that you must add to main clause because it isn’t complete by it self.

Prepositional Phrase Prepositional phrase is a fragment that starts with a preposition, such as in, on, ear, above, regarding, according to, in spite of. Example : In spite of the rain, I enjoyed my run. Main Clause : I enjoyed my run.
Appositional phrase is a noun-base fragment (no verb it) that explains a bit of info about the preceding noun. Example : �His dog, a beagle, is a very friendly fellow. �Canada, a very beautiful country, is north of America.
Participle phrase Participal phrase is a fragment that uses a specific type of past-tense verb (a participal) that acts like an adjective. Example : �Kevin couldn’t find the path, covered by the drifting snow. �Dissatisified with my coffe, I went to the store buy milk.
Gerund phrase Gerund Phrase is a fragment that uses a verb with an”ing”ending (Please note : a gerund isn’t a verb) This “ing” ending makes the gerund act like a noun. Example �I earn money on the weekends, washing dishes at the local diner. �Hoping to get a job, I put my resume on craigslist.
Infinitive phrase Infinitive Phrase is a fragment using the infinitive form of the verb “to”. Example : �We all stood around watching Jim at the park to see if he could pull off a backeard handstand. �The Mad scientist worked frantically to complete his experiment before the police came.
Adjective clause uses “who, which, or that” as is called an adjective clause because its job is to decribe the noun of the main clause. Example: � The bedrooms that we painted during the summer look cheerful and bright.
Adverb clause uses “because” “if” “ although” “when and others, and is called an adverb clause because its job is to describe the verb of the main clause. Example : � I like to swim at the fool when it gets too cold to go for hikes. �I want to complete a Mastera Degree, although it’s very expensive.
Choppy sentence is one that is short and simple, usually less than 10 words in lenght. Although they can be used to positive effect for emphasis, too many of them in succession tends to ruin the flow of writing.
Example of Choppy sentence �Choppy Sentence We must fid new sources of energy. Natura; l sources of energy are dwindling. Solar eergy is a promising new source of energy. Solar energy is energy from the sun. �Corrected We must find new sources of energy because natural source of energy are dwindling. Solar energy, which is energy from the sun, is a promising new source of energy.
