Group 27 PS Pedal Quang Bui Derrick Newsome Exercise peripheral for gaming
Sponsor • Proposed by Marshall Summar • Associate Professor in Pediatrics who is specialized in dealing with disabled children • Ken Roberts • Experienced Engineer, MBA student with youth exercise interests
Project Background • Parents cannot motivate their kids to exercise • Kids willing to game but not exercise • Some of the kids have disabilities that make it difficult to exercise
Market Background • Device is for kids who have an unhealthy amount of body fat • Obesity caused from physical disabilities such as down syndrome • Children often become introverted due to their condition
Market Potential • The product will be targeted toward disabled and obese children • Doctors and pediatricians • Rehabilitation centers • Kid friendly fitness centers
Project Overview Goals • Require exercise to function • Useable while sitting • Burn 100 calories per 35 minutes – 20 minutes of moderate dancing – 12 minute jog in place • Be kid-proof • Present to tech transfer
Project Overview Goals (cont) • Refined prototype - end of February • Make a kid-proof system
Features • Integrate Pedal as exercise • Disconnect controller after 3 seconds of no or low activity • Variable resistance • Playstation and Resistance Lock system • Output of speed • Warning signals when little or no activity

Previous Project 2003 • Wired a unicycle to control the up and down arrows. • Only worked for games that focus on holding up to play • Use current generator to measure motion
Work Completed • Designed the pedaling model and circuitry • Prioritized the circuitry functions – Controller Connect/Disconnect – Red/Yellow/Green Indicators – Calorie/RPM • Ordered new parts to rebuild
Current Work • Programmed the microcontroller to interpret data from optical sensor • Redesign pedal model to be sturdier • Build mount for optical sensor • Build lock for PS 2
Future Work • Test the effectiveness of the pedal system • Incorporate an LCD to output speed and approximate amount of calories burned • Test functionality on different game types • Test/Evaluate effectiveness using video disconnect for other consoles
