General • The floor of a building immediately above ground is known as ground floor. In case part of the building has basement, the floor is termed as basement floor

Characteristics of a good floor • • It should be durable It should be easy to clean As far as possible it should be noiseless It should have a good apperance It should be free from dampness It should be fire resistant It should have low maintenance cost It should not be very costly
Muram flooring Merits Demerits • It is cheap • It has smooth, hard and fairly impervious surface • It is easy in construction • It has sufficiently long life if properly maintained • It maintains comfortable temperature in all seasons. • For perfect maintaince of the surface its has to be given cement cow dung wash once or twice a week. This may be objectionable from sanitary consideration
Brick flooring Merits Demerits • It is durable and sufficiently hard. • It is cheaper than cement concrete, wooden or mosic flooring • It is non slippery. • It is easily repairable. • It is absorbent

Cement concrete flooring Merits Demerits • It is non absorbent and thus it is very useful for water stores. • It is durable and hence it is commonly used in kitchens, bathrooms, schools, hospi tals, drawing rooms. • It is smoot and pleasing In apperance. • It is economical and has the advantages of costlier types of floor. • It possesses good wearing properties and can be easily maintained clean. • Defects in carelessly made floor cannot be rectified, and as such it requires proper attention while laying. • It cannot be satisfactorily repaired by patch work.
Linoleum flooring Merits Demerits • It is washable, dustproof and can be easily cleaned with just a swab of dump cloth. • It has cushioning effect which gives comfort to the users. • It reduces nboise effectively. • It forms a long wearing and durable surface if laid and maintained properly. • It gives a decorative floor finish which looks very attractive. • It is economical • Not recommended in basement floors.
