Describe types of feedback.
• Feedback can do a lot more than make or break a sale. • Feedback can help you to grow—both personally and professionally. • You can use feedback to become a better person!
What Is Feedback? • Evaluative information • Conclusions about your behavior • Assessments of how you are doing
Feedback’s Value • Lets you know what you are doing right • Lets you know what you are doing wrong
Sources of Feedback • Internal—from you • External—from others
Positive Feedback • Praise and approval • Helps you in several ways: Ø Lets you know what your strengths are Ø Reinforces the behavior that led to the praise Ø Motivates you to continue the behavior
Types of Negative Feedback • Constructive criticism Ø Ø For improvement Private Thoughtful Nonjudgmental
Types of Negative Feedback • Constructive criticism Ø Ø Nonthreatening Immediate Specific and factual “Taking Constructive Criticism Like a Champ” by Nicole Lindsay: http: //www. forbes. com/sites/dailymu se/2012/11/07/taking-constructivecriticism-like-a-champ/
Types of Negative Feedback • Destructive criticism Ø Includes a personal attack Ø Harsh Ø Unreasonable Ø Likely to hurt a person’s self -esteem
Importance of Positive and Negative Feedback • If you only receive positive feedback, then you don’t know how to improve yourself. • If you only receive negative feedback, then your morale and self-esteem will suffer. • You need to find out both what you’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong.
Discuss appropriate techniques for responding to negative feedback.

Ø “ 10 Steps to Effective Listening” by Dianne Schilling: http: //www. forbes. com/sites/womensmedia/201 2/11/09/10 -steps-to-effective-listening/ • Make sure that you understand the criticism. • If you have made a mistake, admit it.

• Think about the feedback that you’ve received in the past week. • What positive feedback did you receive? Ø How did it make you feel?
• What negative feedback were you given? Ø Was it constructive or destructive criticism? Ø How do you plan to change your attitude and behavior based on that feedback?
• Many businesses ask customers for feedback. • Do businesses have an ethical obligation to make changes?
