SAMPLE QUESTION FOR SS 6. 8 A: 1. The drawing above shows a diagram of the Steel Dragon 2000, a roller coaster in Japan. It is one of the longest roller coasters in the world. At which point on the roller coaster would a rider have the greatest gravitational potential energy? A. W C. Y B. X D. Z

Calculating Average Speed distance traveled time elapsed

SAMPLE QUESTION FOR SS 6. 8 C: Students in Mrs. Parker’s class placed a steel ball at the top of a long ramp. As the ball rolled down the ramp, the students measured the distance the ball had traveled at various times. The graph above is a record of their measurements. 2. What is the average speed of the steel ball between 3 seconds & 5 seconds of the investigation? A. 2. 0 m/s C. 6. 5 m/s B. 4. 0 m/s D. 14. 0 m/s

Measuring Changes in Motion change in position Motion = time What is the reference point?

Graphing Changes in Motion Some general rules to remember: • The steeper the graph, the faster the motion • A horizontal line means the object is not changing its position- it is not moving, it is at rest • A downward sloping line means the object is returning to the start

SAMPLE QUESTION FOR SS 6. 8 D: 3. The graph shows the speed of a car traveling east over a 12 -second period on a flat surface. In the first 6 seconds shown on the graph, the car is: A. increasing its speed. B. changing direction. C. heading northeast. D. gaining potential energy.

SAMPLE QUESTION FOR SS 6. 9 C: 4. In the diagram above, a wind turbine is transforming energy from the wind. Between which two steps in the diagram is mechanical energy being converted into electrical energy? A. 1 & 2 C. 3 & 4 B. 2 & 3 D. 4 & 5

Unbalanced Forces Change the Speed or Direction of an Object’s Motion

SAMPLE QUESTION FOR RS 8. 6 A: 5. A toy train engine rests motionless on a track. One student begins pushing the engine to the right with a force of 2 Newtons. At the same time, another student begins pushing the engine to the left with a force of 5 Newtons. Which of the following best describes the resulting motion of the engine? A. The train will travel left at a constant speed. B. The train will travel left at an increasing speed. C. The train will travel right at a constant speed. D. The train will travel right at an increasing speed.

Speed vs. Velocity vs. Acceleration Speed- how fast is the runner moving? Velocity- how fast is the car moving & in what direction? Acceleration- what is the rate at which the car’s speed or velocity is changing?

SPEED 511 km/h 581 km/h 120 km/h How fast is it?

VELOCITY rate of motion in a specific direction

ACCELERATION . s v e i t tiv i s a o p eg n a measure of changing velocity

SAMPLE QUESTION FOR RS 8. 6 B: 6. A student is walking home from school. After 5 minutes it starts to rain lightly, so the student walks a little faster. After another 2 minutes it starts to rain hard, & the student runs the rest of the way home. The total time the student takes to get home is 10 minutes. Which graph below best represents the student’s motion during the trip home? A. C. B. D.

SAMPLE QUESTION FOR RS 8. 6 B: 7. At which points is the velocity of the car the same? A. Points A & B C. Points B & C B. Points A & C D. The velocity is not the same at any of the points.

NEWTON'S 1 ST LAW An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed & in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force

NEWTON'S 2 ND LAW Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object)

NEWTON'S 3 RD LAW For every action there is an equal & opposite re -action

SAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR RS 8. 6 C: 8. In a series of controlled experiments, a student measures the force acting on a wheeled cart & the cart’s acceleration. The student’s data are shown here: F = ma 20 kg. Based on the recorded observations, what is the mass of the cart in kilograms. Record & bubble in your answer in the griddable on your answer document. 9. When pressure is released during an earthquake, the type of energy displayed would be: A. kinetic energy. B. potential energy. C. gravitational energy. D. inertial energy.
