Grid Drawing Notes Grid method: Artists draw a grid over their image and then draw a grid with the same ratio on their paper. Artists will then copy the drawing box by box.

Grid Drawing Notes Why do we even use it? Helps artists draw more accurately. It’s easier to draw when parts of the drawing are broken down into manageable pieces (like a puzzle!)

Grid Drawing Project • Create a self-portrait using the grid method • Your photo is 8”x 10”- if we double this, what size is our drawing paper? • Must use correct proportions • Must use value (shading)

Self-Portrait Drawing Rubric: Meets Expectations (4 pts) Grid method- Student drew the 1” grid

Self-Portrait Drawing Rubric: Meets Expectations (4 pts) Grid method- Student drew the 1” grid on their reference image & the 2” grid on their paper correctly. Proportions - Student drew their facial features realistically and used the grid method to draw correct proportions. Value- Student added correct shading using the blending technique to their self-portrait drawing. The value is smooth & blended. Craftsmanship- The student erased any pencil smudges. The student included all details like jewelry, hair, ears, birthmarks, etc. The self-portrait looks complete & neat. Materials- The student used materials safely and correctly. The student returned materials to the correct location when finished. Needs Improvement (3 pts) Does not meet or Incomplete (2 pts)
