Gregory Sams: Fractal Art
Gregory Sams • Born in Los Angeles, California in 1948 • Moved to London when he was three years old • Attended college in California • Before becoming an artist, he worked in the health food industry and created the first Vege. Burger. • In 1990, he moved to art and opened an attraction dedicated to fractals.
Fractal: A geometric pattern repeated at smaller and smaller scales to produce new shapes
Sierpinski Triangle
Essential Question: How do fractals incorporate geometric shapes with artistic design?
Directions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Draw a triangle with three equal sides on your paper, using the ruler if needed. Each side should be 12 triangle lengths. Because all 3 sides have the same length, this is called an equilateral triangle. Find the exact middle, or midpoint, of each side of the triangle. Connect these three midpoints to create four equilateral triangles within the original triangle. The triangle has now been broken down into four equal smaller triangles. Cut out the middle triangle. Within each of the three remaining triangles, repeat steps 2 -4, and then again with each triangle left over after that. Use the additional materials around the room to color and shade your fractal however you would like. Cut out your finished triangle, and choose a color of construction paper to glue it onto.
