Greenspace Alliance of Canada’s Capital FCA General Meeting, April 18 2018
Who we are • Founded 1997 • Non profit, all volunteer advocacy organization, incorporated under federal law • Our aim is to protect and preserve greenspace in Ottawa-Gatineau • Includes anything green, plus wetlands and waterways • About 30 active members, 125 subscribers
What we do • Monitor, educate, advocate, agitate, litigate re: • Policy • Federal, provincial, municipal regulations and policies that affect greenspace • City and NCC Official Plans, masterplans and other plans • Threats to greenspace • Rural • Urban boundary • Major Urban • Urban forest • Greenbelt • CEF, Vincent Massey, Rockcliffe, etc. • Other greenspace
Major projects with FCA partnership opportunities • Greenspace Inventory and Mapping project • Detailed community level maps of greenspace assets • Means of determining if Official Plan targets re: greenspace are being met • 4 ha per 100 K population, every residence within 400 m of accessible greenspace • Community map validation blitz in early summer? • 2018 Municipal election • All candidate survey on greenspace issues • Candidate education and messaging on greenspace issues that they will face in next term of council • Opportunities for ward level collaboration?
