Greenery Day みどりのひ By Alex & James
What is greenery day? • Greenery Day is celebrated on May 4. This is a day that has been set aside for nature appreciation. • Until 1988, April 29 was celebrated as the birthday of Emperor Showa. It was decided to keep this day a holiday even after his passing away in January 1989 and to name it Greenery Day because of the late Emperor's love of nature. In 2007, April 29 became Showa Day, and Greenery Day was moved to May 4.
WHAT HAPPENS ON GREENERY DAY On this day, commemorative plantings of trees are held around the country, as are many events that bring people closer to nature. A walkathon was held in a large park in Tokyo to get people to think about the natural environment. A lot of kids participated in this event.
OTHER FACTS! • There also events to honour nature held in local parks all over Japan. • Greenery day, along with other Japanese holidays, form the Golden Week. • The term "green" is often associated with environmental issues these days and this is also the case on Greenery Day. So Japanese people clean up local parks and other areas on greenery day, just like we do on clean up Australia day.
