Four Methods of Control Police Terror- terror and violence are used to force obedience and crush opposition. Police serve to enforce the central Government’s policies.

Two More Methods Propaganda and Censorship- biased or incomplete information used to sway to accept certain beliefs or actions. Control of all mass media allows this to happen Anyone who disagrees must retract their words or they are imprisoned or killed.

More Methods… Religious or Ethnic Persecution- “enemies of the state” are created to blame for all that goes wrong. Often these groups are easily identified and are subjected to campaigns of terror and violence They may be forced to live in certain areas or subjected to rules that apply to only them.

Joseph Stalin’s Russia Secret police used armor cars and tanks to stop riots They monitored phone lines, read mail, and planted informers everywhere Even kids turned in their parents for saying disloyal things at home Every family feared the knock on the door, which usually meant the arrest of a family member

The Great Purge 1937 - Stalin turns on the Communist Party -launches campaign of terror directed at anyone threatening his power -Thousands of Bolsheviks who helped stage the Revolution in 1917 were executed or sent to labor camps -by 1938 Stalin had complete control of the Soviet Gov’t and Communist Party

Russian Propaganda and Censorship Soviet newspapers and radio broadcasts glorified the achievements of communism, Stalin, and his economic programs Many Soviet writers, composers, and other artists also fell victim to official censorship.

Stalin Controls the Economy Command Economy- system where the Gov't makes all economic decisions Five-Year Plans- attempt to industrialize Russia through increased output of natural resources To achieve impossible goals, consumer goods were limited Led to shortages in food, housing, clothing, etc…

Agricultural Revolution 1928 -Gov’t seized controlled over 25 million farms in Russia and combined them into collective farms ran by the gov’t Peasants resisted, were forced onto the farms by bayonet by the police 5 -10 million peasants died as a result

Results Though most of the goals were not met, the Soviet economy boomed Out producing previous years by far Stalin had successfully industrialized the Soviet Union
