Green Lab Certification What is the Green Lab
Green Lab Certification
What is the Green Lab Certification? The Green Lab Certification works with researchers, staff, faculty, and building managers to envision and implement sustainable practices and technologies in lab buildings at the individual lab and departmental level across the University.
Why focus on labs? Labs are the most energy intensive spaces on the Harvard campus, so resource conservation and energy efficiency in the labs are of significant importance in meeting the University's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Because of the resource intensity of lab science and the unique conditions in each individual lab, sustainability is approached at the lab-specific level in addition to building-wide efforts.

Reduce Energy Consumption Shut the sash Clean out your freezers to save space and time spent looking for samples Routinely remove ice buildup Defrost -20 freezers Turn Off lights and unused equipment
Reduce Waste Follow lab and office recycling procedures • Consolidate purchases to reduce packaging waste • Participate in and donate to a lab Freecycle or the Green Labs Reuse Room
Conserve Resources and Purchase Sustainably Share freezer space and equipment with neighbors instead of buying your own. Reduce autoclaving needs by introducing a two-streamed process where only required items are autoclaved and other items are run through the dishwasher. Use a solvent recycler for your lab space or sharing one among neighboring labs. Make energy efficient purchasing choices and purchase Energy Star certified equipment. Use reusable over disposable products whenever possible. Use Green Lab Purchasing Tips when we purchase lab equipment and supplies. Use office paper and supplies made out of recycled content.
