Green Environmental Management System Important things to remember while collecting recycling: Recycling and trash are separated at Bedford VAMC Our recycling contractor DOES NOT separate the trash from the recycling; therefore, all Housekeepers must separate trash from recyclable materials If there is food in a recycling bag, it is now considered contaminated and would be placed into the trash Fluids present in the recycling bags DO NOT necessarily mean the recycling bag becomes trash, it is important to use one’s judgment to decide if the bag is contaminated or not A good rule of thumb on deciding if recycling is contaminated or not is the smell, if the fluids do not have a nasty smell, then it will be acceptable to go to recycling 3

Green Environmental Management System For Housekeepers collecting recycling, there areas where the recycling is staged so that it can be picked up and transported to the Recycling Center. There are FIVE locations at Bedford VAMC where recyclables are staged: Building 12 In Front of the Storage Area in the Basement Building 3 Next to the Mail Room (Cardboard Only) Building 61 Room B 18 Building 70 Loading Dock in the Back of the Building 78 Room B 29 4

Green Environmental Management System Compost Site Located past the Golf Course Driving Range. Bedford VAMC recycles all tree/bush trimmings, grass clippings, and Grounds materials at the compost site. The materials are reused every Spring throughout the campus to supplement new dirt or mulch. 11
