Government �Tyranny – complete rule by one � Tyrant had complete control of government and unrestrained power �Democracy – rule by the people � Every adult male citizen shared the responsibility of ruling the city
Sparta �Location: southern Greece on the Peloponnesus �Background: � Dorians (Spartans) made inhabitants “Helots” or slaves � Constant fear of a Helot uprising caused the Spartans to create a militaristic state �Life in Sparta: � Centered on the training of warriors � Both boys and girls underwent intense physical training to prepare them to be warriors
Sparta �Government: � Oligarchy � Board of 5 Spartan nobles maintained the status quo � Encouraged neighbors to be oligarchies � Formed the Peloponnesian League
