Greek Art • Greek art was concerned with balance, order and beauty. • Greek art and sculptures focused on life-like forms, but it was very idealistic (artists always showed perfect human bodies). • Painted vases and pottery are the only paintings to survive from Ancient Greece. They show us how daily life was carried out in Greece.

Greek Literature • Literature and writing was extremely important to the Ancient Greeks. • Most Greek writers were inspired by Homer. • The most important Greek literature was plays. Sophocles and Euripedes were important writers who created tragedies, or plays that told of human suffering. • Other Greek playwrights like Aristophanes wrote comedies, or plays that mocked people or customs
Greek Literature The most famous Greek tragedy is known as Oedipus Rex. This story tells of a man destined to kill his father and marry his mother (unbeknownst to him). In the end, Oedipus finds out the truth of his life and stabs his eyes out so he can no longer see suffering!!

Greek History • A Greek man named Herodotus is given the name “Father of History” because he created a different way to write history. • Herodotus did not just write down names and dates, he gathered information from many sources to write a well-rounded account of an event • Herodotus taught us we cannot rely on myth and legend to write history and we also have to be careful of bias, or conflicting accounts
