AUTOBIOGRAPHY • a book written about someone’s OWN life • Nelson Mendala wrote an autobiography about his life in South Africa.
BIOGRAPHY • a book about a person’s life written by someone else • I read a biography about Amelia Earhart yesterday during class.
ANTIBIOTIC • Antibiotics are a type of medicine that a person takes to help them live, because it destroys bacteria and infection in the body. • When I had pneumonia, the doctor gave me an antibiotic to heal me. • People take antibiotics for ear infections, strep throat, sinus infections, bronchitis, and for many other illnesses.
BIOLOGY • the study of living things • My favorite class in high school was biology because we grew flowers and studied the inside of a frog.
BIOLOGIST • a person who studies living things • On our field trip, I met a biologist who looked at human cells under a microscope.
BIOPSY • the removal of living tissue from the body • My grandfather needed a biopsy to find out if he had lung cancer.
BIOSPHERE • the zone of planet Earth where there is life (between the crust and lower atmosphere) • All living things on Earth can be found in the biosphere.
MACROBIOTIC DIET • a diet thought to help people live longer because it focuses on natural foods • Susie is on a macrobiotic diet, and she ate bananas and walnuts for breakfast.
NEUROBIOLOGY • the study of the nervous system in living things and how the living thing learns and reacts • If you want to study the human brain, you will need to take neurobiology classes in college. • In neurobiology, scientists study the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and all the human responses in the body controlled by the nervous system.
SYMBIOSIS • how two different living organisms live together and depend on each other • Bees and flowers have a symbiotic relationship because they both need each other to survive.
