GREEK DRAMA/PLAYS • The Greeks not only created history, but they also created dramas. • These dramas were part of religious ceremonies. • The dramas also honored Greek heroes and gods. • Greek Drama: the Tragedies and the Comedies.
GREEK WRITERS • Aeschylus and Sophocles were the best two tragedy writers in Greece. • Tragedies- were written to describe hardships of Greek heroes. • Aristophanes was known for his comedies. • Comedies- were written to make people laugh about important ideas • Thucydides is created with being the first historian. He wrote about the Peloponnesian War. • Question: Do you believe Thucydides fought in the Peloponnesian War?

PHILOSOPHY: THE FAMOUS THREE GREEK PHILOSOPHERS • Socrates- always believed in looking for knowledge. He would ask many questions such as, “What is courage? ” • Plato- was a student of Socrates and he created the Academy, a school where ideas were shared. He also wrote The Republic. • Aristotle- believed in reason and moderation and ordered thinking. He was also a tutor for Alexander the Great. • Socrates Video

GREEK MATHEMATICS & ASTRONOMY • Euclid- he was known for geometry. Much of modern geometry rules come from him. • Hypatia- taught astronomy and mathematics. • Greek Astronomy- realized the Earth was a sphere and tried to measure its size. Map stars and constellations. • Ptolemy- created an idea of a geocentric solar system (earth in the center) that, while incorrect, helped us understand the universe for hundreds of years. • Heliocentric solar system (sun in center).
GREEK MEDICINE AND ENGINEERING • Hippocrates- was the greatest Greek doctor of all time. Treated diseases and conducted surgery. • His ideas have helped doctor behavior today. • Archimedes- Greek inventor, pulleys and levers, mathematics, weapons, invented the water screw.

Explain why you believe your 3 choices are so important? • 2. IN CLASS ACTIVITY- GREEK TRAGEDY OR COMEDY • With a groups of 2 or 3 classmates, please create your own Greek comedy or tragedy. • For instance my Greek tragedy would be called, “NO PIZZA” a play about a man who goes to a local pizzeria only to find the pizzeria has run out of pizza. The man is upset and saddened by this news. • Be creative! I really want you to have fun with this. • If you don’t get to present today you will be able to present on Monday I promise. • Skits should be 2 -3 minutes. You can have a script if you want.
