Greater Manchester Major Trauma Network GM TILS Debrief
Greater Manchester Major Trauma Network GM TILS De-brief following Major Trauma
Types of Debrief Two main types Hot debrief (happening shortly after event) and a Cold debrief (convened at a later stage) Debriefs can occur after: After simulation // As a regular scheduled event //After a traumatic event
Purpose of debrief • To learn from the event to influence future events • To identify areas of good practice • To allow people to talk about what has just happened and about their feelings • To reflect on the impact of decision making
Structure of a Hot Debrief Can use either of these question formats What worked well? What didn’t work well and needs work to improve? OR What was supposed to happen? What actually happened? Why were there differences? What can we learn for next time?
Cold Debrief • ‘Cold debrief’ allows organisations &individuals to process events, consider responses and further questions • Allows for recognition of ongoing or unresolved issues to surface • Presents an opportunity to discuss improvements and changes in practice
Remember • Trauma can be personal or professional • Past experiences can contribute to current reactions • Reactions may seem disproportionate at the time • Behaviours may change • A person may change
Finally … • We are very good at normalising traumatic events • Listen carefully to colleagues • Focus on the positive areas • Offer assistance and a listening ear • Give them some private time if they are struggling to deal with event • Signpost staff to professional support if required
Burnout and Compassion Fatigue • Approximately 82% of emergency nurses had moderate to high levels of burnout • 86% had moderate to high levels of compassion fatigue
