Great Science Share for Schools 5 th GSSf. S June 2020 Our 3 rd @Burlington Junior school
To expand links across our local community and schools 36, 000 residents in Bridlington 8 primary schools- including Hilderthorpe, our STEM Enthuse Partners 2 secondary schools- Brid Secondary and Headlands 2020… GSSf. S legacy Then lockdown hit #Bridlington
Great lockdown activities- many on the GSSf. S website/padlet Children were sharing via Class Dojo, Twitter and GSSf. S showcase Explorify resources were a great compliment ASE Coronavirus Hub resources- excellent
Weekly themes Supported development of: Community and transferable skills Outdoor learning Collaboration, resilience, determination Enhance social and cultural mobilityvital in progression to future selves Bird Song Royal Astronomical Society World Oceans Day World Environment Day Waste Warrior Week Scavenger Hunt
Themes increased engagement in nature, cookery, exercise and mindfulness at home- a lovely thing to witness. The Space. X launch enthused many pupils to engage with Science.
We collaborated closely with Brandesburton Primary School- a village school about 10 miles from Bridlington ‘The International Dawn Chorus theme, relating to birds, fitted really well with our Key Stage One overarching theme aimed at getting the pupils out in their gardens and observing nature. Scavenger Hunt theme… linked perfectly to the Key Stage One strand, “Living things and their habitats”. By far the most popular week was the ‘World Oceans Day’ which really caught the children’s imaginations and led to lots of pupils submitting their work electronically to the showcase. We were all… delighted to be feature ‘school of day’. We were able to make strong links to year three ‘Plants’ and ‘All Living Things’ in year four, five and six and also worked scientifically across the primary age range.
On the day… Farmer Tom’s slot very exciting for our Burlington pupils. They loved hearing the answers to their questions from Farmer Tom. It really made them feel like they were part of something bigger- which they were!
Twitter- a brilliant way to engage. Sharing in a wider way meant that pupils at home or in school could have their work, ideas, activities or investigations shared; others could comment and retweet, therefore sharing again-in a wider way
A brilliant way of engaging schools and families‘Spotlight’ schools included Hilderthorpe, Burlington, Martongate and Brandesburton Primary. The showcase was an excellent way to access Science from all participants and the pupils loved seeing themselves and their schools being featured. The range of work and innovative way it was presented was encouraging, interesting and engaging.
Question makers
GSSf. S 2020 - during a time of huge uncertainty and a new way of working in schools- was great. #Community was developed across Bridlington with links made between most primary schools, and with individuals further afield- some will develop more in the future. We are looking forward to GSSf. S 6! This will enhance science for our pupils- developing their investigative and collaborative skills as well as their thoughtfulness, science interest, knowledge and community.
