Treaty of Fort Laramie • U. S. Government agreed to close the Bozeman Trail in return the Sioux agreed to live on a reservation along the Missouri River. • Sitting Bull never signed the treaty • The treaty only brought temporary peace
Battle of Little Bighorn • George A. Custer reported that the Black Hills had gold and the gold rush was on • Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull crushed Custer and the 7 th Cavalry
Assimilation - a plan under which Native Americans would give up their beliefs and way of life and become part of the white culture.
Dawes Act Congress wanted to “Americanize” the Native American. The act broke up the reservation land to individual Native Americans. The head of the household received 160 acres and an unmarried adult received 80 acres of land.

Soddy – Trees were scarce on the plains, so settlers built their homes out of prairie turf. The home was warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It had little light, leaked when it rained and was a haven for snakes, insects, and other pests
Morrill Act
Reforms Oliver Hudson Kelly – started an organization for farmers that became known as the Grange. Spent most of their time fighting the railroads.
Populism The movement of the peoplewas born with the founding of the Populist Party or People’s Party. Wanted an increase in the money supply; a graduated income tax; a federal loan program; popular vote for senators; single terms for the President and Vice-President; 8 hour work day; and restrictions on immigration.
Bimetallism - A monetary system in which the government would give citizens either gold or silver in exchange for paper currency. This is what farmers wanted. Gold Standard – backing dollars solely with gold. William Jennings Bryan – lost 1896 election to William Mc. Kinley.
