Stock Market Before 10/29/1929 ● Bull Market ○ Stocks on the rise for long period of time ● Buying on Margin ○ Paying only part of stock purchase price ○ Borrowing $ from bank to pay rest ● Stock Speculation ○ Looking for opportunities where significant price movement is likely ○ risky financial transactions to profit from short term fluctuations
Stock Market Crash - October 29 th, 1929 ● Not as many new investors ○ stocks start to decline in price ● Professional investors begin to sell ● Black Tuesday ○ October 29, 1929*** ○ Stocks drop $10 -15 billion
What is the date of the stock market crash? What is the term given to this day?
Great Depression Causes and Effects Day 2
Why did the Stock Market crash? ? ? ● Unequal distribution of wealth ● Buying consumer goods on installment plans ● Overproduction ● Loss of export sales ● Federal Reserve mistakes ○ Did not raise interest rates during bull market ○ Raised them AFTER depression hit ■ made it harder to get a loan
Overproduction Chart (example) Assembly Line = more cars made (people that need cars buy them, tons of cars left over) Waiting for cars to sell, less are being made, less rubber/steel/oil/gas being bought Even fewer cars to be sold - people cannot afford it unless they take out a loan Layoffs, lower wages Slow down of industry, less jobs needed
Effects on People ● Business failures ● Unemployment ● Losing everything due to payment plans (installment buying) ○ Houses, cars, etc. What do you think was the biggest long term impact and why?
Families had to use all of the resources around them. . . like cooking with weeds, as this sweet lady shows us how.
At the beginning of the crash, the wealthy had not been affected yet. Under Hoover the government looked to the people to help each other. Laissez-faire. . . means “little to no intervention from the government”, how do these images reflect that term?

Hoover’s Attempts to fix the GD - Continued ● Supported local aid and focused on indirect relief from the states ○ Ex. gave money to Red Cross, Salvation Army, YMCA ● Asked people to donate/help each other ● Rejected his salary ● Donated his own money ($25, 000 a year) ● Emergency Relief & Construction Act gave $1. 5 billion to states ● Congress passed $160 million tax cut ● Founded government agencies (committees)
