Graphing “There are three types of lies. Lies, damn lies, and Statistics” -Benjamin Disraeli
Skittles!!! • Do all skittles bags have an even number of colors? • Are there more red skittles than any other color, etc.
Data • Tables are a neat and organized way to collect data • Graphs allow you to easily show the data in a way that people can draw conclusions easily. • Statistics are mathematical tests that can tell us useful things about data – Example: the mean, median, mode – Standard Deviation: the mean of the mean
Skittle Colors Trial RED PURPLE YELLOW GREEN ORANGE Other
How to calculate • Mean: add up all the numbers from a column and divide by how many numbers there are • Median: Line up all the numbers in order and then pick the one in the center • Mode: The most repeated number • Standard deviation: the mean of the mean
Our Activity • Step 1: Divide your candy by color and create a Table • Step 2: Build a graph to compare the amount of each candy (GRAPH 1) • Step 3: Talk to your neighbor table; Create a comparative graph using their data and yours (GRAPH 2) • Step 4: As a Whole class; Create a graph to compare all the colors in the WHOLE bag (GRAPH 3)
Our Activity Continued: • Step 5: Calculate the Mean, Median and Mode for you data; based on your LAST graph (the Circle one) • Step 6: Write a Conclusion paragraph describing your findings
