GRAPHING IN THE COORDINATE PLANE By, Mrs. Muller
KEY VOCABULARY Number lines: a line on which numbers are marked at intervals, used to illustrate simple numerical operations. Coordinate plane: a grid formed by intersection of two number lines. Quadrant III Quadrant IV Y-axis X-axis origin Y-axis: a vertical number line X-axis: the horizontal number line Quadrants: the axes divide the plane into 4 sections Origin: where the axes intersect
MORE KEY VOCABULARY Order Pair: (x, y) gives the coordinates of a point’s location. X-coordinate Y-coordinate X-coordinate: displays the position to the right or left of the y-axis (where on the x-axis it is located) Y-coordinate: shows the position above or below the x-axis (where on the y-axis it is located) Where have you seen coordinate planes before?

HOW TO LOCATE THE POINT ON A GRAPH First see where it is located on the x-axis; that will be your x-coordinate Record that point in the order pair where the x goes. Second see where it is located on the y-axis; that will be your y-coordinate Record that point in the order pair where the y goes. Remember that an order pair is written like this: (x, y)

HOW TO GRAPH A POINT First you look at the x-coordinate of the order pair. You move your finger to that spot. Then you look at the y-coordinate of the order pair. You move your finger from the x-axis up to that location on the y-axis. See the example on the next page for clarity.
