What are Graphic Novels? A subgenre of picture and comic books (though considerably longer in length) 2. A story told using a combination of words & pictures in a sequence across a page 3. LAYOUT • Refers to how the panels are arranged on the page. • How is the layout of the sample page set up?
PANELS • A panel is an individual frame, or single drawing, in the multiple-panel sequence of a comic strip. A panel consists of a single drawing depicting a frozen moment.
CAPTION • Expository text • Used to provide extra information about characters, setting, or plot • Used to set up time.
GUTTER • Space between panels • Can be used to convey shifts in time & space
DIALOGUE BALLOON • Also known as speech bubbles. • Conveys the oral conversation between characters of the story • Comes in a variety of different shapes depending on the character’s tone.
THOUGHT BALLOON • Conveys character’s thoughts • Always drawn as a “cloud” shape
SOUND EFFECTS • Conveyed through words acting as sounds • Creates action in a scene
MOTION LINES • Indicate how characters and objects are moving • Adds dimension to the pages
BORDERS • The lines surrounding a panel. • Usually solid black lines • However, authors can choose to be creative with their borders.
• These are the basic elements that make up a graphic novel. • All of these elements used together will create action, time, and space to readers. • In addition, these elements help set up the tone and mood of the story via the colours used, and the layout of the pages. • Remember, graphic novels are more than just these basic elements. The elements ADD to the plot of the graphic novel, and helps us readers understand think critically about the storyline, characters, and morals within the book.
