Genitiv mit Filmen Communicative Objective: Students will be able to use articles, adjectives and nouns in the genitive case to create a brief paragraph and ask and answer questions about a particular subject Grammar Component Activity Time Warmup Briefly discuss what types of movies and genres students like. Write the names of different genres on the board. 5 mins Input Phase Introduce a movie marquee and a few movie posters whose titles use the genitive case. Produce slide introducing the main role of the genitive in German: to denote possession. Students are provided a worksheet to help them reproduce the key information. Teacher explains the -s vs. -es principle in masculine and neuter nouns. 10 mins Assimilation Phase Students work in pairs to discuss the fill-in-the blank movie titles on the slide, then 15 mins share with the class. Teacher selects students at random, points to a picture, students respond with the appropriate answer. Students work with a partner to complete the mechanical drill; check in plenum. Teacher introduces movie title and plot summary exemplifying the genitive, students underline all of the examples. Application/Extension Phase Teacher introduces movie title and plot summary for Das Leben der Anderen. Students read the synopsis and identify uses of the genitive. Teacher explains to choose a movie genre, create a title and design a plot for a movie based on some of the words from the mechanical drills. Use at least 5 examples of genitive, including examples of declined articles, adjectives and nouns. Students interview one another to ask questions on the final slide. 20 mins
