INTRODUCTION Fig 1. Mozambique Rainfall Pattern • Dry lands cover important cropping systems in Mozambique mainly in Tete, Manica, Sofala and Gaza Provinces (fig 1). • Grain legumes are among the 7 priority value chains according to Operational Framework for Agricultural Development (20152019). • Sorghum and Pearl millet are the 3 th and 4 th most important cereals after maize and rice, respectivelly. 2

MAJOR PRODUCTION CONTRAINTS • Limited access of farmers to high yielding adapted varieties; • Limited access to seeds and seed delivery system; • Information on crop management not well delivered; • Biotic (pests and diseases) and abiotic (drought and low soil fertility) constraints; • Not suitable credit systems for small farmers. 4

OPORTUNITIES FOR GLDC IN MOZAMBIQUE • High demand in a domestic and international market;

OPORTUNITIES FOR GLDC IN MOZAMBIQUE • High demand in a domestic and international market; • Need for more protein food for nutrition security (43% of children suffers malnutrition); • Need to help farmers to fill the growing food industry and market demand; • Growing of private sector participation; • Youth farmers incubation programs; • Well established network of partners • Availaibility of technologies (high yielding varieties and crop management pratices). 5

RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS • SORGHUM 10 varieties released (2000 and 2011) • PEARL MILLET 3
