WHAT IS A GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)? • IT IS A NOUN • “A NUMBER THAT INDICATES A STUDENT'S AVERAGE GRADE” –MERRIAM-WEBSTER. COM • “THE AVERAGE OBTAINED BY DIVIDING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF GRADE POINTS EARNED BY THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CREDITS ATTEMPTED —CALLED ALSO QUALITY POINT AVERAGE” –MERRIAM-WEBSTER. COM
IT IS MORE THAN A NOUN…
IT IS USED IN DETERMINING… • CLASS RANK • HIGH SPORTS ELIGIBILITY • HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP • COLLEGE ADMISSIONS • SCHOLARSHIPS • NCAA ELIGIBILITY • UPON GRADUATION FROM COLLEGE, COMPANIES MAY USE GPA WHEN DECIDING TO HIRE EMPLOYEES
CALCULATING GPA • FOR EACH LETTER GRADE YOU EARN, THERE IS A SPECIFIC NUMERICAL VALUE ASSOCIATED WITH THAT LETTER GRADE CALLED QUALITY POINTS (CHART ON NEXT SLIDE). • FOR EACH CLASS YOU PASS, YOU EARN CREDIT. TYPICALLY EACH CLASS IS WORTH 1 CREDIT, BUT SOME CLASSES ARE WORTH. 5 CREDIT. • TAKE THE NUMERICAL VALUE ASSOCIATED WITH THE LETTER GRADE (THE QUALITY POINTS) AND MULTIPLY IT BY THE NUMBER OF CREDITS EARNED IN THAT SPECIFIC CLASS. • DO THIS FOR ALL OF THE CLASSES YOU COMPLETED. • NEXT ADD UP ALL OF THE CALCULATED NUMBERS AND THEN DIVIDE BY THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CREDITS THAT YOU COULD HAVE EARNED. • THAT WILL BE YOUR GPA.
