Key Vocabulary Parallel Gradient Y- intercept Linear

Parallel lines have the same gradient. The equations of all linear graphs can be rearranged into the form y = mx + c where m is the gradient of the graph and c is the y-intercept.

Parallel lines These pairs of lines have the same gradient: y = 3 x – 4 and y = 3 x + 1 (gradient = 3) y = 5 -2 x and 2 x = 5 – y (gradient = -2) 2 x + 4 y + 5 = 0 and 8 y = -4 x (gradient = -0. 5)

Parallel lines – now you try Write down the gradients of these pairs of lines: y = 5 x – 4 and y = 5 x + 1 y = 5 - 3 x and 3 x = 5 – y x + 5 y + 5 = 0 and 10 y = -2 x

Parallel lines – now you try Write down the gradients of these pairs of lines: y = 5 x – 4 and y = 5 x + 1 (gradient = 5) y = 5 - 3 x and 3 x = 5 – y (gradient = -3) x + 5 y + 5 = 0 and 10 y = -2 x (gradient = -0. 2)

Parallel lines – now you try Write down an equation of any line parallel to each of these lines in the form y = mx + c: y = 2 x – 4 2 x = 5 – y x + 10 y + 5 = 0

Parallel lines – now you try Write down an equation of any line parallel to each of these lines in the form y = mx + c: y = 2 x – 4 e. g. y = 2 x + 1 2 x = 5 – y e. g. y = -2 x + 10 y + 5 = 0 e. g. y =0. 1 x + 1

Problem Solving and Reasoning The cost of a taxi journey is £ 1. 50 plus £ 2 per mile travelled. Write this relationship as a equation in the form y = mx + c. What is the value of m? What does this tell us about the cost of the journey?
