Worried about Word Problems?
Word problems are just puzzles! There are lots of ways to solve math puzzles. Here are some we will practice using today. Do the Math! Work Backwards Guess and Check Draw a Picture Use Math Tools
Do the Math • If you know how – just solve the problem. Bob has two dogs. Each dog eats 2 lbs of dog food a day. How much dog food does he have to buy each week? 2 x 7 = 28
Work Backward • Use the answers to “plug in” to the question until you find one that’s right. FIRST, find the key words in the question! Bob has two dogs that eat 28 lbs of dog food a week. How many pounds of dog food does each dog eat in a day? A. 7 B. 14 C. 2 2 dogs eat 28 lbs total per week 28 lbs ÷ 2 dogs= 14 pounds each week per dog 14 lbs per week ÷ 7 days per week = 2 lbs per day
Guess and Check • Estimate – it’s greater than or less than or about this much… then find the answers that match. First: find the key words. Bob has a dog that eats 14 pounds of dog food in a week. If Bob plans to only buy one bag of dog food every two weeks, how big of a bag should Bob buy? A. 40 lbs Does 2 X 14 = 40? No and it’s really too much. B. 30 lbs Does 2 X 14 = 30? Close, it’s 28. B would be the best answer C. 25 lbs Does 2 X 14 = 25? Close, but it’s not enough for 2 weeks.
Draw a Picture • Use your scratch paper to help you draw a picture, make a list, or write a number sentence. First: Find the key words. Bob has 3 hunting dogs. They eat a 42 pound bag of food each week. How much food does each dog eat every day? 42 lbs Per week ÷ = 14 lbs Each Per week ÷ 7 days = 2 lbs Each Per Day
