Lesson 1: What are Plants? • Hunt down and document all the plants you can find in your home and yard. • Remember this includes: House plants, flowers, trees, grasses and weeds! • When you take photos of these organisms get as close as you can to get lots of details. Check out the examples below Lots of plants but not close enough to see detail! Close enough to see lots of detail in the plant!

Lesson 3: Parts of a Plant Using the image on Adflipped, draw and label one of the plants you’ve documented. Remember that not all plants are flowering (angiosperm) plants so they may not have all the parts in the diagram.
Materials • Seed (bean, flower, etc. ) • Soil • Container • Ruler, pencil, logbook • Camera • Patience Instructions • Fill container with soil about 2 cm from the top. • Plant the seed about 1 cm into the soil. • Add water to moisten the soil. • Water the soil once a week or when the soil is dry to the touch. • Using your ruler record the height (growth) of the plant, take a picture of it, and record your observations in the logbook. Bonus procedure: If you have more seeds and containers plant multiple seeds and keep them in different parts of the house such as: • On the windowsill in direct light • In a closet or cabinet • On the kitchen table out of direct sunlight • Outside on a patio or deck. Lesson 5: Why do we Need Plants? Remember you can look at the labels on food, medicine and other products to see if any plant-based materials are used in them! Don’t just rely on your brain – dig a bit deeper into the things around your home! Ask a parent before you go through the medicine cabinet though! Food Medicines Building Materials Other
Bonus Lesson: Paint Swatch Scavenger Hunt • Using the paint swatch samples on Ad. Flipped (or your own if you happen to have them!) go on a community scavenger hunt to find all the colours you can in nature. • You can collect plants, bark, stones and dirt but don’t take from other people’s gardens! • Collect your samples and photograph them together to see how close to the swatch you can get!
