Grade 3 Unit 2 Lesson 1 Tri-graph igh; Vowel y making long (i) sound; Changing Rule for adding vowel suffixes
Tri-graph igh When we see 3 letters together making only 1 sound, we call it a tri-graph. ◦ Tri = 3 (A tricycle has 3 wheels) ◦ Tri-graph igh makes the long (i) sound. ◦ We see 3 letters but only hear the long (i) sound. ◦ Examples: high, right, fright, night, light
Vowel Y = long (i) sound We have already learned the letter Y can be a consonant or a vowel. We already know vowel Y can make the long (e) sound as in the word … candy. Now we will learn that vowel Y also makes the long (i) sound in the FINAL position of words. Examples: my, sky, dry, sly, spy, cry
We Changing Rule know that a SUFFIX is a VOWEL SUFFIX if the FIRST letter of the suffix is a vowel. ◦ -ing, -er, -ed When you add a vowel suffix to a base word with vowel Y in the final position, you must change the Y to i before adding the suffix unless the suffix begins with the letter i. Base Word: cry + ed = cried cry + ing = crying
Word Sort Practice Base Word Vowel Suffix –ing dry dries, dried, drier drying spy spies, spied spying apply applies, applied applying multiply multiplies, multiplied multiplying carry carries, carried carrying
