Your application will be assessed in 4 different ways. 1 2 3 4 OVERALL ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT CORE ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT DEGREESPECIFIC PERSONAL PROFILE REQUIREMENTS All grade 11 and 12 ‘academic’ and fine arts courses. All grade 11 and 12 courses within subject categories related to the degree to which you are applying. Specific courses of grade 11 and/or grade 12 level required for the degree to which you are applying. Paragraph responses to specific prompts, read & evaluated by multiple UBC staff.
UBC Personal Profile 4 -7 Questions, depending on program 1. Tell us about who you are. How would your family, friends, and/or members of your community describe you? If possible, please include something about yourself that you are most proud of and why. (maximum 250 words) 2. What is important to you? And why? (maximum 250 words) 3. Describe up to 5 activities that you have pursued or accomplished in 1 or more of the following areas: Club, Family/Community responsibility, Creative or Performing Arts, Work/Employment, Athletic, Volunteer, Service to Others. Please outline the nature of your responsibilities within these activities. (50 words per description) 4. Tell us more about ONE or TWO activities listed above that are most important to you. Please explain the role you played and what you learned in the process. You will be asked for a reference who can speak to your response. (maximum 350 words) 5. Additional Information: You may wish to use the space below to provide UBC with more information on your academic history to date and/or your future academic plans. For example: How did you choose your courses in secondary school? Are there life circumstances that have affected your academic decisions to date? What have you done to prepare yourself specifically for your intended are of study at UBC? 6. Please submit the names of two referees who know you well and can comment on your preparedness for study at UBC. Examples of referees can include an employer, a community member, a coach, a teacher/instructor, or anyone who knows you well. One of the referees you select MUST be able to speak to one of the activities/experiences described in one of your long answer responses above. One MUST be a school official (teacher, counsellor, administrator). Neither referee should be a friend, family member, or paid agent.
UBC Personal Profile Your profile will be assessed against 4 criteria: 1. ENGAGEMENT & ACCOMPLISHMENT How do you pursue your interests and manage your responsibilities? What do you do with your time when you are not in class? What would you (or others in your community) consider your most significant contributions and accomplishments? What have you have learned from your experiences? Make sure to give specific examples. 2. LEADERSHIP Have you undertaken responsibilities and activities that have benefitted those around you and/or contributed to your community in a meaningful way? If so, what have you learned about yourself and others in the process? Leadership can come in many forms. Any act of responsibility and/or initiative that serves others is a form of leadership. And remember – it’s not just about being in a leadership role, it’s about what leadership has taught you. 3. SUBSTANCE Have you spent sufficient time reflecting upon what you want to say? Have you answered the questions in a detailed and meaningful way? Is the content of your Personal Profile superficial or clichéd, or are you presenting interesting, well thought-out, and relevant ideas? Remember that the trained UBC readers will be reviewing and comparing thousands of Personal Profiles. 4. VOICE How do you communicate your ideas? Regardless of what you choose to write about, ask yourself the following: Have I written a Personal Profile that is genuine and unique to who I am? Does my profile authentically reflect my own words? Will my voice stand out in a meaningful way, or will my profile read like many others? Proof-read carefully!
UBC Personal Profile A Personal Profile requires CAREFUL, REFLECTIVE THOUGHT in every answer. Focus less on listing / describing activities. Focus instead on what you have learned through these experiences, on how you have grown. REFLECTIVE THOUGHT CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! https: //you. ubc. ca/applying-ubc/how-to-apply/personal-profile/ ** Remember, one of your referees/references MUST be able to speak to at least one of your activities, and one referee must be a school official.

Check your email • Apply as early as possible for OC regularly and make sure post-sec info isn’t in junk folder or filters!
Why Apply Early? Please apply as soon as possible because: 1. Some college programs are “first apply, first in” and those ones tend to fill up very quickly. 2. If the post-secondary institution requires additional information from you, you then have the time to fulfill their requests. 3. Some programs require supplemental applications that take time to complete. 4. Some schools allow students to choose courses based on application date. Therefore, if you are late in applying, you may not get the classes you want.
DID YOU KNOW? • Your Grade 11 final grades AND your Grade 12 First Semester final grades are used by the post secondary schools to determine whether or not you are accepted. (ie: UBC, SFU) • It is IMPERATIVE that your grades are meeting the admission standards (ie: English Language Admission Standard), set by the college/university, by your January report card. • Don’t slack off, and don’t think you can wait until June to get the marks you need!! Admissions offers are conditional until final grades are received in late July from the Ministry. • Be sure to complete your Student. Transcripts Service (STS) ASAP.
WARNING: ONLINE COURSES Grade 12 students taking a DL (online) course for post-secondary entrance : • Complete online courses by Feb. 1 st if you want them considered in your transcript evaluation for admissions. • Make certain your online school reports your marks to the Ministry of Education so your marks are part of the Student. Transcripts data transfer.
DISABILITIES and POST-SECONDARY • Most institutions have an office specifically for supporting students with DOCUMENTED challenges: learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and/or mental health. • They can help create accommodations in classes for students relevant to the disability. • Plan ahead to organize the documents you need. (ie: from a qualified professional such as a doctor’s report) • Process takes time so start early! Students should contact your PSI by June so accommodations can be set up for when school starts in September. • UBCO: “Disability Resource Centre” https: //students. ok. ubc. ca/academic-success/disability-resources/ • OC: “Accessibility Services” https: //www. okanagan. bc. ca/Student_Services/students/accessibility-services. html
